Mike,
Stock options are the only way to pay officers and directors who work for nothing besides the prospect that they can bring value to their companies.
The objective is not to dilute the company's shares but to try to bring long term value by not depleting its cash resources. When stock options are exercised the money expended by the grantee goes directly into the treasury of the company.
