The following realized investment losses killed HMN's quarterly earnings. Any idea what the two securities were and why would they need to be sold at a loss if HMN is rolling in cash?

Realized Investment Gains and Losses

Realized investment losses were $3.1 million for the three months ended March 31, 1999 compared to gains of $6.4 million for the first quarter of 1998. The current quarter realized investment loss resulted primarily from the sale of two fixed income securities.
