Walter, actually both are very well known, but in different niches. TEAC/Tascam covers the more high-end, audiophile consumer market plus professional studio-type gear. Sony also covers the studio equipment area, but is not (IMHO) as well-received by audiophiles. The average kid looking for a cheap playback device would probably opt for Sony; a serious and well-heeled audiophile would lean towards TEAC (at least I would).
