Tech cos. partner to link Internet and Phone networks

NEW YORK, May 14 (Reuters) - Telecom gear maker Lucent Technologies Inc.(NYSE:LU - news) said Friday it joined other top communications firms to simplify and lower the cost of linking Internet-based networks with traditional telephone systems.

The networking alliance, which includes Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:CSCO - news), Hewlett-Packard Co.(NYSE:HWP - news), Level 3 Communications (Nasdaq:LVLT - news) and Nortel Networks(Toronto:NT.TO - news) will develop and promote so-called ''Softswitch'' technology to link Internet Protocol (IP) and traditional telephone networks, the Murray Hill, New Jersey company said in a statement.

Lucent said softswitches allow a range of software and hardware to work together. The devices lower the amount of time it takes employees to manage a network, enabling companies to offer Internet and phone services at lower costs. Softswitches also allow a greater number of networks to interact with one another, increasing the chances for partnerships.

Softswitches are able to interpret what type of data they are receiving and distribute it to the correct system. Part of a new generation of telecom equipment, they carry out functions currently performed by digital circuit switches.

Other members of the so-called Softswitch Consortium include Enron Communications Inc., a unit of Enron Corp. (NYSE:ENE - news), NorthPoint Communications Group Inc.(Nasdaq:NPNT - news) and Rhythms NetConnections Inc.(Nasdaq:RTHM - news)
