I know that at least ONE of shalom's favorite hymns is 'It is well with my soul'. Here is some interesting information about the author.

Mr. Spafford and his family lived in Chicago. In 1873 , he sent his wife and four daughters on a European vacation trip with plans to join them a little later. His family sailed on the SS Ville due Havre, and on the trip across the ship was struck by another ship, and sank. Spafford's wife was the only surviving member of his family and when she reached Cardiff, Wales she sent this telegram, "Saved alone." Spafford sailed to meet her and on the trip across, supposedly near the site of the death of his daughters, he penned "It is well"

Surely sorrows like sea billows did roll for Mr. Spafford, yet the sorrow was not the end of the poem. The other verses of his poem are words of GRACE, MERCY, and VICTORY.
