Art, I don't mean to get between you and patsy, but the short interest is mostly attributable to the Arbitrageurs who make their money on mergers. They buy the target company stock and immediately short the shares of the acquiring company to protect themselves (Or they may buy puts but that would cost them more). That is why you will frequently see the price of aquiring company's stock go down upon announcement of a merger. In fact there is an article about staples/Office depot and the short interest in This week's Barron's. Check it out. I have no position in either SPLS or ODP.
