Thomson Consumer Electronics, the American division of Thomson Multimedia, today announced a new personal digital audio player called the RCA Lyra. It plans to start selling the Lyra this fall for $200, the Wall Street Journal reported. It will play the popular MP3 music format and the new RealAudio G2 music format, utilizing RealJukebox. Other reports indicate that there will be MS audio support as well. It will use SanDisk's removable flash memory cards and IBM's mini-hard drives to store audio.
SUNNYVALE, CA, April 27, 1999 - SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) announced today that it will supply Maycom Company Ltd., a Korean consumer electronics company, with its MultiMediaCard for use with Maycom's new Merit MP-100 Player. A 32MB SanDisk MultiMediaCard will be included with each Merit MP-100 Player sold. "With increasing design momentum, our 32MB MultiMediaCard is gaining acceptance from the Internet music market to adopt our flash storage card as the industry's standard Internet music storage solution," said Nelson Chan, vice president of marketing at SanDisk. "We are pleased that Maycom, one of the driving forces in the Korean portable consumer electronics market, has chosen the SanDisk MultiMediaCard as the ideal solution to store music for the new Merit MP-100 Player." The new pocket-sized Merit MP-100 Player, weighing only 65 grams, measures 2.05 x 3.47 x .91 inches. Operating on two AAA batteries, the very small, light and easy-to-grip Merit MP-100 Player includes a worldwide FM radio. A parallel port MultiMediaCard reader/writer for Windows® 95 and 98 desktop computers is also included with the sale of each Merit MP-100 Player sold.
