Datek Online Holdings Corp.
Edison, N.J.
CEO: Jeffrey Citron

Online stock trading is booming, and by late 1998,
no online brokerage was growing faster than
Datek. According to Credit Suisse First Boston
analyst Bill Burnham, Datek ranked fourth among online brokers in the
fourth quarter, grabbing 10 percent of that market. Like E-Trade
Group Inc. and other rivals, Datek offers low commissions as well as
quotes and other services. But Datek, a notable company in last year's
Hot 100, has an advantage. Its electronic trading network for Nasdaq
stocks, The Island, ensures fast trade execution, making it a favorite of
day traders and other active investors who are expected to continue
fueling volume growth. -- L.F.

NextCard Inc.
San Francisco
CEO: Jeremy Lent

NextCard offers a Visa account that cardholders can manage entirely
online, from credit approval forward. Customers choose the pricing
terms that best suit their needs and receive 24-hour online customer
support. NextCard even has a rewards program to earn points for
purchase discounts or frequent-flier miles. Virtual plastic is a
competitive market with some big players, but NextCard can point to
its own big players, investors such as Sequoia Capital and Kleiner
Perkins Caufield & Byers. The company is growing, and NextCard's
next move may be into additional banking services. -- L.F.

UPSIDE's 1999 HOT 100 AWARDS
Our Advisers

Beginning in January, Upside invited a select group of financial analysts,
market researchers, venture capitalists and other high-tech VIPs to join
the first-ever Upside Hot 100 Advisory Panel. We wooed them with
promises of intrigue, glamour, and above all, the chance to vent. The
response was overwhelming, as was the review process that ensued.

Over a period of several weeks, we communicated with our "virtual"
advisory panel via e-mail, sending streams of messages back and forth
and back again. Advisers reviewed Hot 100 nominees, named their
top overall picks and offered their suggestions for companies not
already in the pool of nominees. (See Advisers' Choice Award, page
88.) We kept the winners a secret--even from the advisers--so we are
excited to share the results of this collaborative effort. Below is a
partial list of those who volunteered their expertise to help us identify
the hottest private companies in the industry. Thanks for all the hard
work, team! -- N.F.
