"Lotus Advances Leadership in Mobile Computing EasySync 3.0 and Mobile Services for Domino Delivers Business-Critical Enterprise Applications Anytime, Anywhere
SAN DIEGO, Calif., April 12, 1999 -- At DemoMobile 99, Lotus Development Corp. today outlined its latest mobile computing initiatives and products that provide professionals more capabilities to collaborate regardless of location. Delivering on the concept of "pervasive collaboration," Lotus unveiled Mobile Services for Domino (MSD) 1.0, its new wireless solution which extends Domino's reach to a broader range of devices and global networks. Lotus also announced the shipment of EasySync Release 3.0 for Notes, the latest version of Lotus' personal digital assistant (PDA) synchronization solution, which leverages the new powerful capabilities of the Lotus Notes R5 client.
Showcased on-stage at DemoMobile 99, the leading computer industry conference that focuses exclusively on products and technologies that address the needs of professionals on the move, Lotus outlined the latest versions of its proven and mature mobile and wireless Domino extension products, and articulated its future vision for collaborative mobile applications. The products represent Lotus' innovation in extending the power of Domino and Notes into the networked world and expansion of Lotus' market leadership.
"Lotus Notes and Domino are leaders in providing mobile workers with access to their messages, calendars and applications. Our vision is to deliver pervasive collaboration -- providing mobile access to Notes -- and Domino based applications, anytime, anywhere and from any popular device," said Christopher Herot, director of Lotus' Mobile Communications Group. "Organizations are turning to Lotus because they know that we have proven solutions available today. Mobile Services for Domino and EasySync 3.0 will build on our momentum and greatly extend the value of Lotus' collaborative infrastructure, giving our customers greater competitive advantage and organizational efficiency."
Pervasive Collaboration Delivers Access to Enterprise Data Anytime, Anywhere
Mobile Services for Domino 1.0 is a server-based application which extends the reach of the Domino messaging and collaborative infrastructure to all leading handheld and wireless devices and wireless data networks by allowing users to send and receive Notes Mail and short messages to and from cell phones, pagers, PDAs and handheld computers. MSD also allows users to remotely access their Domino servers over wireless networks in order to read, compose and reply to e-mail messages and calendar entries from wireless devices. Additionally, users can access the Public Directory to look up e-mail addresses and phone numbers.
As a significant enhancement to Lotus' previous wireless solutions, MSD includes a new set of enhanced application interface extensions, enabling developers to configure custom mobile applications for use on handheld and wireless devices. For example, to greatly enhance an organization's responsiveness to customers, users can enable an existing Domino customer care solution to distribute messages to a remote customer service representative via pager or cell phone upon receipt of a trouble ticket. The representative can then send a reply to the customer's e-mail address instantly from the cell phone, ensuring high-quality customer service.
MSD provides IT managers and systems administrators with enhanced security features that include the ability to restrict the devices and wireless services that are allowed to access Domino enterprise-based data. In addition, MSD 1.0 provides the ability to simultaneously manage multiple wireless data networks, multiple mobile device types and multiple user profiles from a single, familiar Domino-based administration interface.
Through MSD, Lotus is working toward supporting all industry-standard networks and protocols. MSD 1.0 supports the most widely used mobile devices in the enterprise, ranging from pagers to cell phones and from palm-sized to handheld companions. Lotus is working closely with major wireless network providers worldwide to ensure support for the most popular paging networks and cellular phone networks around the world supporting protocols such as GSM, CDMA, TDMA, SMTP and SNPP. This work will result in MSD inter operability with all market-leading networks and devices.
EasySync 3.0 Delivers PDA Synchronization for Notes R5
With the shipment of the latest version of EasySync, Lotus is meeting the increasing need among enterprises for mobile applications today by delivering solutions to the market. Lotus EasySync 3.0 for Notes gives users the easiest way to synchronize their e-mail, calendar, tasks, contact and memo information between Notes and market-leading Palm OS platform PDAs including IBM's WorkPad c3 and 3Com's PalmIIIx and PalmV devices. New features like repeating calendar and repeating To Do tasks allow users to keep track of their schedules and To Do lists anywhere and anytime. Notes R5 gives users the ability to establish categories when creating To Do tasks, a feature which is also supported on the To Do application on the handheld device. EasySync also supports new Notes R5 calendaring features, including meeting location.
EasySync was recently Platinum-certified, passing Palm Computing's Platinum Compatibility Test. This verifies that EasySync meets compatibility, quality and usability standards for the Palm Computing platform set by 3Com and administered by independent test companies such as Quality Partners.
"Mobile computing is the single most important technology of this day," says Sara Radicati, president & CEO of The Radicati Group, Inc. "Organizations will benefit from Lotus branching out its leadership in the mobile computing market to areas like messaging and knowledge management. People want to feel like they are at the office when they are accessing their data from the road. Lotus has made and continues to make great strides to ensure that this happens."
