Walter,

One of our thread members posted the information about RIO's formatting problems. You need a separate software program to reformat the SmartMedia card so that it can be used in a digital camera again.

Unfortunately the retail outlet where you buy a RIO (or a digital camera lacking forward compatibility for SmartMedia) will not tell you this at the time of your purchase. They are going to learn the hard way when people start returning these purchases.

The best solution is to just buy a digicam utilizing CompactFlash and an mp3 player using CompactFlash as well. Right now there are 48MB, 64MB and 96MB SanDisk CompactFlash available vs. 16MB and possibly 32MB SmartMedia cards. For CD quality music you need about 1 MB per minute of play time, therefore CompactFlash is the clear choice. I own an mp3 player with a double decker MMC arrangement and I am waiting until MMC to be available in higher capacity. If I had known that the Cassiopeia E-100 would sport mp3 capability I would have waited and bought that instead. IMHO, the Windows CE compatible mp3 software applications are the "KILLER APPS" for SanDisk and will create a new megamarket for CompactFlash. My NEC handheld has the ability to use 2 CF cards simultaneously.

SanDisk will mint the currency common to all mobile computing platforms; flash memory in the form of CompactFlash and the MMC. The writing is on the wall.
