Hope you don't mind me cutting&pasting your comments over here, but they seem tailor made for this thread also. What caught my eye above is the investment you mention that telcos have to make in, "fiber & co-axial plant.." Was this a typo? I was under the impression, they would need fiber upgrades to deploy VDSL, but where is coaxial brought in?

Now this is my extreme simplification model but, I assumed they would blast digital TV channels and data from their headend office, via fiber, to the CO's. From there it goes out to the homes via twisted copper pair.
