Mike - Thanks for the great Red Herring article on CMGI's possible "grand design" with LCOS link-up -- some very interesting scenarios....

In addition to the Disney connection, here are a few highlights for others on the thread:

..........

<< "Lycos, Angelfire, Tripod ... I wouldn't be surprised if each one is a top 20 Internet asset on its own," says Mr. Jacob. "The reach of these companies is substantial ... CMGI could even acquire Lycos and break off these properties, or even use the portal to help assist its startup companies by providing significant distribution opportunities."

Sources close to CMGI agree, suggesting that it is shortsighted for investors to still view CMGI through its @Ventures series of startup funds. Its other properties, such as Engage Technologies and Adsmart Network -- not to mention its i-Cast broadband broadcasting strategy -- fit into the synergies of its larger family of companies, which could use the distribution capacity of a Lycos.

"They could buy it, chop it up and sell it off in small pieces, call it an LBO for the Internet age, or it's not unreasonable for them to at least keep the portal for their own distribution," says Henry Blodget, Internet analyst with Merrill Lynch (NYSE: MER).

There's another compelling reason for CMGI to buy Lycos. CMGI is facing a legal problem: it must either own a larger chunk of an operating business or be declared a mutual fund and have to operate and report its financials under a different set of rules -- something it is not likely interested in doing. >>
