Having reluctantly observed him for a gruesome two years plus, I do not think that the word "cranky" does proper justice to his "normal" (please observe irony of this choice of word) state of minds (He does seem to display, among other things, more than one personality on this thread though I am, admittedly not qualified to render diagnoses on this issue.)
Try to be nice to him. He seems to get energized when he arouses anger, frustration, or other violent or extremely strong emotions. Be sympathetic, whether you are sincere or you are not. It diffuses the situation and probably frustrates him. And never, never, never get dragged onto his turf in a disagreement. This occurs when he take an oblique position on something that you have not really said. If you permit him to redefine a position that you, in reality, have never taken, you are lost.
