Understood that crises are frequent in post-Soviet Russia.

As to Yeltsin being out of touch, well, he always has been slightly shaky and not a bit... delicate... in affairs of state. His health doesnt help matters. However, the past several months have shown that he is still the fox in the henhouse. He is a crafty old fellow, you must admit. His administration pulled off an international coup by placing Russia back in the forefront of diplomacy, he has made it appear that Russia is the voice of sanity and moderation and wooed Germany and France. He pulled off another coup in making a clear road for Primakov and his comrades to fail in attempts to mediate the Kosovo crisis, allowing him to place moderate Chernomyrdin in his place and win a victory for the reformists and gives him an excuse to sack Primakov. He has used the firing of his cabinet as an excuse to put loyalists in positions of strength, loyalists that have shown their willingness to use force in his defense. In so doing, he has defused his impeachment. He is a shrewd old man...
