Magambo,

Microprocessor could be next hurdle in set-top contest
Now that Tele-Communications Inc. has largely split the baby by making room for Microsoft Windows CE and Sun Microsystems' Java in its digital set-top, the next stage of the contest is who will win deals for other components of the box, including the microprocessor. TCI over the weekend cut two deals, one to include Windows as the operating system in at least five million set-tops it will buy plus probably a few million more to be purchased by affiliates. But TCI Chairman John Malone denied Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates's desire to be the primary software in the box by agreeing to license a version of Sun's Java, allowing other software developers to write applications in that programming language. Gates, who sees the purportedly flexible Java as a threat to his dominance of operating systems, had sought to convince Malone to rely entirely on Microsoft products. The next big fight will be for the processor, the microchip behind the box. Intel Corp., Sun, IBM and Advance Micro Devices all are vying to be the main supplier and have submitted proposals to the company. Other vendors are seeking to supply applications such as interactive program guides and e-mail programs. The big elements to TCI are internet telephony software, for which sources say the MSO is seeking to charge big bucks to a long-distance partner, and interactive advertising (Malone has publicly acknowledged he would charge entry fees for access to TCI and its allies' digital customers).
