America Online has released a new version of its Communicator browser with updated streaming and security software. Netscape Communications, acquired earlier this year by America Online, has posted Communicator version 4.6. The update offers RealNetworks' G2 multimedia player, a simpler way to get digital certificates, new 56-bit DES encryption ciphers for export and domestic versions, and unspecified bug fixes.
The browser is available from download sites, including CNET Download.com.

Netscape released Communicator 4.5 in October. Version 4.51, a minor upgrade that came with AOL's Instant Messenger 2.0, let users find stock quotes through the address bar, and fixed a trio of bugs, came out in March.
Next on Communicator's agenda is version 5.0, the first release to feature the Gecko browsing engine developed under the auspices of the open source project Mozilla.org. Version 5.0 will be a more componentized browser and have better standards compliance, according to Netscape. A beta version is due this summer.
