I think I have smelled a durian, although I didn't know what it was at the time.

A few years ago we used to see some packages come through the mail from overseas that reaalllly stank. Like something had committed a particularly nasty bowel movement inside the package and then died. I had the misfortune of getting one of these on my route. There was no way I was going to have that monstrosity with me inside the jeep, so I strapped it to the front pot-lid mirror up by the bumper. I made it the first delivery of the day. I forgot to look later to see if vultures were circling over that house.
