I think a lot of the pleasure comes from the sheer indulgence of owning a large chunk of time all to yourself, time for the things only you like- which may not be terribly exciting to anyone else.

Damn, I envy you. The last time I had a chunk of time all to myself - I think it was sometime last year - I thought about what to do with it, and by the time I finished thinking it was over. But then your children are older than mine. Whenever I hear parents of teenagers talking about the impending trials of the empty nest, I want to suggest a brief role-swap. It would probably give a bit of perspective to all involved.
