Attending these network shows is always overwhelming and because of time constraints I was only able to do the show for 10 hours. I have varied interests such as web publishing and advances in Internet technology so didn't spend that much time with any one vendor. But these are my random observations divided into three sections.

Part I - Nbase-Xyplex and MRV (this post)
Part II - Competitive analysis (Sun afternoon)
A) Interexchange Carriers
B) Large Gigibit and Tarabit Routers
Part III - Conversations with Mannix O'Conner, Nbase-Xylpex VP - Sales and Shay Gonen, General Manager - Nbase-Xyplex, Israel (Sun night).

Arrived at the Convention Center and at the most prime real estate location on the corner was the Nbase-Xyplex 16 tire wheeler announcing their Linux router covering both sides. (Even Cisco and 3Com had their wheelers in nondescript locations. Nortel had taken over MRV's balloon site from last years show.) Nbase-Xyplex again had a booth outside where registers could get a cup of coffee.

One of the problems I had with the the announcement of the Best of Show awards as that as I was listening to the finalist being announced (which wasn't real clear) I was fighting with other attendees to use the Norvell Internet access PCs. (Oh well, you guys, gals got at right eventually.) Nbase-Xylpex put up their "Best of Show" about 25 minutes after the I + P news broadcast; pretty good.

The Nbase-Xyplex booth was fairly conservative with no additional enhancements from last year. This time they did have several areas set aside as small meeting rooms where they could promote to clients <VBG Jack>. On display were, of course, the 3016, the AcceleRouter, Edgeblaster II, Edgeguardian II, Linux router, <Fiber Driver and other 10/100/1000 routers. The Linux router is a neat "black box" about 3 feet high, 2 feet wide and 2 feet deep.

All personnel were in taste full black slacks and black shirts with Nbase-Xyplex logos embossed (except, of course, Schlomo with his either crumpled or clean white shirts hanging out over his pants).

The video presentation was enthusiastically presented by a professional presenter and was crisp and direct with the phrase "we are a vertically integrated network provider mentioned many, many times". Cisco was mentioned twice as 'not really able to meet client needs' (paraphrased). The presenter stated how Nbase-Xyplex was able to address client needs. 1) The BankOne example which is old news, 2) How Nbase-Xyplex provided a solution to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) with their FiberDriver to provide redundancy for the communication system controlling the locations/arrivals of all trains and 3)How the Nbase-Xyplex Max Server provided a solution of one of Compaq's internal tracking applications.

Met a former Xyplex female Marketeer who was released during the downsizing of Xyplex and was recently re-hired again by Nbase-Xyplex. She was very happy to again be with the Company. There were perhaps 4-7 employees from Israel who got to do the show so I guess that is a very good thing.

Anyway, Part II tomorrow.

Ron

And as I mentioned before NAC was not at the show because Near Schlomo is working very hard for the upcoming SUPERCOMM show (He has to stand out among the 700 other presenters <g>).
