People just expect to see the violence now, and I don't think its a good thing. There was a lot of menace in the film noir movies- but the real violence happened off screen. I think that is better. Film is too real - the violence is too real. I always think "What if these were real people?" And if the film is any good you do feel the people are somewhat real. In that sense a movie is very different from a play.
