The Fed is on the job

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- The Federal Reserve is getting more concerned about inflation, but it won't raise interest rates next week to fight inflation, economists say.
However, the Fed probably will announce a subtle shift in its policy toward tighter policy, they say, although it's a close call.

Others disagree.

Mark Vitner, economist at First Union, said the Fed isn't fooled by the oddities that produced April's strong CPI report and won't shift its bias. "The three-month trend in the core CPI is still at a 2.3 percent pace, in line with the Fed's expectations," Vitner said.
