pompsander,

Why would you make noise right now? There's no product available; nothing has changed in the last couple of months. The "we're still on track" message has been stated a couple of times over that period. What would they tell people? "Rambus is coming this Fall so don't buy a computer yet"? I think Intel might have a problem with that press release. Having been in the marketing business for over 15 years, I'm a firm believer that you make noise when the product is on the shelf. If you do it before then, you simply drive potential customers into the store where they either: 1) get angry because the store doesn't have your product yet, or 2) buy a competitors product. Neither result is a positive one.

At this point, they don't even really need to publicize the success wins (at least not in the PC field). A year ago they needed to send out these types of releases to get the major players who had not yet signed licenses to do so. But virtually everyone is signed up, and all the major players know that DRDRAM will be the successor to SDRAM.

And it's a waste of money to make noise just to drive the stock price up. That would be the pinnacle of irresponsibility. The money should be spent on activities that drive revenues and earnings which in turn will drive the stock price, and they can't do that yet. If they drove the price up now, and then Intel delayed Camino again, they could get hammered with lawsuits. How much of their bankroll would you want them giving to the lawyers?

We'll get there. Patience everyone. My guess (having seen Intel's conservative style) is that once everything starts shipping, we'll see a LOT of noise about Rambus.

Dave
