According to this source, the specialist short positions are currently a bearish indicator for the market. marketgauge.com I don't view the NYSE specialist positions as a contrary indicator, since they know what's in the order books, who's buying and selling, and in what quantities, and when. They're the ultimate inside traders. The specialists are also capable of 'painting' the tape to mask the true nature of the future direction of the underlying equity.
