Hopefully this is a lead in for tomorrow: May 16, 1999 Dow Jones Newswires DJ Biomira: Theratope May Boost Survival After Transplant Dow Jones Newswires ATLANTA -- Biomira Inc. (BIOM) said a study suggests that treatment with its Theratope cancer vaccine following autologous stem cell transplant can increase survival and decrease relapse in ovarian and breast cancer patients compared to the transplant procedure alone. In a press release Saturday, Biomira said 40 cancer patients were treated with high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous/syngenic stem cell transplantation, with 26 of the patients also receiving five doses of Theratope. All treatments took place between Sept. 1, 1995, and Nov. 18, 1997. Biomira said the chance of death was more than two times greater among control group patients than in patients receiving Theratope. The chance of relapse was about 1.7 times as high in the control group as in vaccinated patients. Biomira develops vaccines and diagnostic tests for cancer.
