Now I understand better why we can say that mortality has not improved. I will have to go and bother the docs again about why THEY think it has improved in the absence of new therapy and in the face of stratification as a control. My guess is that they see the improvement as I did: as a case by case question of mortality following a diagnosis.

In Texas, I do not think awareness has really been pushed; but recognition and protocol in the Critical Care unit has supposedly helped a great deal. We'll see if this is true.
