What issue is This? What issues are so many of our countrymen telling us is more important than punishment for obvious, severe crimes and reprehensible conduct in place of an uplifting example?
The issue seems undifferentiated from traditional Liberalism, but the President's unaffiliated supporters are not adopting the old lines. They are not telling us a lot, so it seems undifferentiated from contentment. Our best clue might be in the President, himself. His public life and policies are one walking contradiction. Style and substance so mingled that the line separating is imperceptible. He seeks constant attention, but would rather talk than deliver. Everything is now, now, now: loyalty is got, not given; allies are stabbed; deals are broken. His personal life is the same. There is no impulse control. Sexcapades are documented. Temper tantrums would be as obvious were they not protected. Food control is so lost he will work out to keep the Micky D's steak house habit. [Binge, purge?] He is high maintenance. His physical, emotional, and intellectual needs must be serviced. But he is unsophisticated. It is white trash women he seeks out to relate to. Under stress he reverts to the crude strategy of silly lies. Why would anyone, let alone those who agree with him, want him to represent them.?
He not only represents his supporters, he actually models what they have in common. They are caregivers, and he combines every charge they care for. Here is the needy sick, the crotchety old, the irresponsible husbands, the wild and simple children. They relate to him, and understand what he says. But they Only relate to him. They have been excluded from the rest of American Life. They won't let him sink, anymore than they would their own kid, and they won't let others take away the only message they've sent that got through.
The caregivers of America are desperate. They have been abandoned. They have lost hope. |
