Jim, I have invested in Amati this past week and do look forward to profiting from them. I know am beating a dead horse here and realize what I say on this board will have no influence on what Amati executives chose to do. I still feel that a combined DMT/CAP modem is the way to go. You may not buy a Yugo for $60,000 and I would not either but it appears to me others may not be so bright. The market at this point seems to want DMT and CAP...I say give them what they want. From prior posts I understood that USR will first make a CAP modem and then in 1998 a DMT/CAP modem...as are other manufacturers. From my reading I would prefer a DMT modem...but I want to talk to everyone else also. So if I had a choice I would prefer a combined modem. Sort of like owning an Acura NSX (don't like Porsche's as much) and a Yugo to drive through mud with when you must. A quote from Red Herring Direct "In his estimation (Chambers, CEO Cisco Systems), it's this ability to scrap something and move on that separates companies like Cisco and Microsoft from the rest of the pack. "The companies that get in trouble are those that fall in love with 'religious' technologies," he says. "The key to success is having a culture with the discipline to accept change and not fight the religious wars." (For an opposing perspective, see our interview on page 90 with Fore Systems'Eric Cooper, who is famously devoted to ATM)"
These are my current thoughts on this issue but I reserve the right to change my mind. I do rely a good bit upon the opinions of yours and others on this board.
Another group of questions I have regards the telco/backbone issues with the projected ramp up of ADSL broadband implementations. From what I can gather ATM will be a core technology in supporting ATM in all of it's flavors. Do you have any favorite companies? A few I have seen are PMC/Sierra, TranSwitch, IGT, MMC Networks.
Regards,
