AMAT Folks/Econometricians,

... and so ends the playful discussion on macroeconomics, IS/LM curves, interest rates, the bond market and other exogenous variables that have little to do with any fundamental, long-term valuation of our favorite security beginning with the letter A?

For anyone interested, VSEA (i.e., Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates ... the orphan child of the old Varian) is reporting this morning. This will be an interesting data point. Perhaps their management team will be able to shed some light on the FOMC meeting tomorrow or the direction of interest rates in the next forty-two days?<g>

While they are at it, maybe they will even discuss the ion implant market in which they and AMAT compete (though ETN has a much larger share than AMAT)?

Seriously, ion implanters are one of the more capacity-sensitive products and it should be interesting to hear their view of the marketplace.

P.S., Please do not respond with a post on the importance of interest rates in the CAPM ... or any discussion as to the trade off between some academic's view of risk and return ... or the long term 'substitutability' of bonds and stocks as an asset class ...
