While I believe you're entirely correct, it doesn't preclude some manufacturers wanting to pre-empt other ratings systems or eliminate design obsolesence (like the previous 3 versions of closed-captioning that they all wasted money/design/effort on). Some just may chose to kill it all with one fell swoop. Not to ever have to worry about it. If I was one, I would only do this if I thought I could market having this feature in it, making it better than someone else's, getting a slighlty higher premium and differentiating my set from someone else's.

I recently bought another TV and they've all become commodities. There is absolutely nothing to distinguish them except for the size of the cabinet (will it fit into the furniture or not?). Who has better speakers or silly things like built in video. Some idiot (Sharp?) may just pay a few bucks to slap some silly "V-Gis Inside" sticker on the tube. Hey, never underestimate the lack of creativity for marketing and strategy types.
