Just doesn't seem that bright a thing to do ... downgrade before the quarterly call?

How about this for a justification for an AMAT downgrade:

SSB's expectations are based on a micro call with macro ramifications. They argue that the Market will correct if Greenspan chooses to tighten or change his bias (obviously it is a Board mechanism ... but, that won't work as well with this story). This clearly has an impact on AMAT in the short-run ... therefore, they will look like geniuses if they are right.

The rationale for the tightening: Greenpsan gets upset because he has been cut-off by Andrea Mitchell ... so, he comes into tomorrow's meeting hell-bent on making someone else feel miserable ... isn't that the way Paul Volcker used to go about his rate decisions?
