The version of the rumor I heard was that IBM was getting out of the PC building business. The rumor said IBM would sell DELL machines with an IBM label on them. In effect, IBM's sales force would be working for DELL and one of DELL's biggest competitor's would now be a business partner. This makes much more sense than a buyout. IBM sells a ton of PC's, they just can't build them at a profit.
