I tend to disagree Vi. I think in fact this is what Russian investors have been waiting for. A more reformist government and a less powerful communist block. Not to mention oil prices that are higher than they have been in over a year. For 8 months now the world has been basically saying Russia is not reforming and the communists are going to take over and renationalize industry. Last week has shown a turning point on both counts. Reform is back and the end to the communists power is at hand. I have heard some analysis say that Russia has suffered the worst depression of any industrialized country this century. If we are near the bottom of this depression, what are Russian stock prices going to do over the next few years ?? They will probably go much higher. I sure wish I could have bought companies like Exxon and AT&T during the Great Depression, people that did made a lot of money by just buying and holding. Russia is in the same scenario now IMHO. The Russian economy bottomed in September of 1998, and is looking to be much better in the months ahead. With the political uncertainty ebbing, this becomes a great scenario for Russian investors.
