Or it could just be bad. Star Trek insurrection was bad- and I love Star Trek (I even watched the old ones with
Shatner whom I loath detest and generally cannot stand).

We saw Star Trek: InchErection on Thursday and were quite disappointed. Jonathan Frakes (Number 1) directed, and the movie came off like a two-hour TV episode. It even had a shoestring feel to it. Why do I think that any second Mr. Frakes will turn into the camera and "guarantee it" that he'll find me a cheaper suit?

I downloaded the Phantom Menace trailer at work. Looks decent I must admit. And I heard a review on NPR (just happened to - was easing the car into the garage, doors and all) wherein this woman was saying "You may have heard that the movie stinks. Well I really liked it. So long as you realize that Star Wars isn't high literature but rather a broadly-applied saga of basic themes, like the Arthur story - get ready to kick back and enjoy a simple pleasure." I'm with her. I don't want Lucas doing Jane Austen.

But if he could have retained Lois McMaster Bujold as a story consultant - it would have been fabulous. She is my second favorite writer, bar none, of the last twenty years. Her sci-fi, while technically very good, is technically unobtrusive. It's the human story (now on its ninth or so volume) that has me riveted.
