James: I believe that the smaller forward looking companies are the greatest winners here. The larger ones have all this mass that has been going into core network matters, not edge like we are talking about here. No knock against the big guys, someone had better be doing that kind of research.

To get into the remote access/telecommuting field the larger ones buy the smaller ones. That creates all kinds of problems for the inhouse staff re: integrating the new product line, training on unfamiliar operating systems, providing customer support. Ultimately the end user suffers.

Small to mid-size companies are prospering in this area. Witness the rise of some stars like SHIVA. ACC's router line is edge, edge concentration at the central site, and easy-to-use remote/telecommute boxes. Telebit is OEMing stuff in this field. Another star, Ascend started this way, but are they growing out of it?

As more people bring companies to our attention here, let's analyze their strengths and weaknesses.

An interesting side catagory to the Layer 1-3 (Lines, bridges, routers)stuff we have been discussing is the operating systems people will use to do this fast access. The desktop operating system of past years kinda falls down in a client/network environment.

But that IS a different forum all to itself.
