Hi Mike:

One of the best experts on provisioning the local loop for xDSL
service is in fact Dr. George Hawley, one of the founders of Diamond
Lane (recently purchased by Nokia), and who used to be a regular
poster on the Last Mile thread a few years back (Frank C. can
comment on this topic).

Dr. Hawley wrote a good survey paper about 2 years ago explaining
how he saw the local loop in te future. It essentially involved
pushing fiber to the neighborhood. From the CO to the DLC, his
model had OC3 fiber. On the other side of the CO, he had OC12.
It was based on assuming that each CO supports 10,000 lines,
and a 10% take rate. He also assumed each customer would need
6Mb/sec (the analysis assumed ADSL service pre ADSL-lite).
For VDSL you would have to multiply his numbers by 5.

Frank and WTC are the experts on this topic.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
