I can see your logic but this is how I am viewing it.

1) Cpq still is the number Computer maker in the world
2) Altavista can be spun off
3) With the right management and execution the company has the ability to recover to the type of company it was 10 years ago.

There is no question that dell builds the premier PC in terms of quality. Few people remember when that was the case for Compaq. At some point in time they decide to become the Packard Hell of the industry leading to their demise. I think if the correct steps are taken they will be able to make a run at regaining their old reputation. Compaq is far from dead except to the folks who have held their stock for 3 years.
