Chuck - Re: ", I am indicating a concern for my INTC holdings and am looking for some analysis on what this may mean to INTC short and long term."
How do you interpret AMD sitting on ONE MILLION UNITS of unsold inventory?
Clearly, AMD will dump these - but how much will that hurt AMD and Intel?
AMD is already losing money - ergo, they will LOSE MORE MONEY !!
Intel just rolled out a faster Pentium /// CPU and lowered its prices on existing Pentium II & /// CPUs - so the AMD dump will be buried in the noise of Intel's price cuts - except for AMD which will take a BATH on those million units.
Now, the 600 MHz K7 !
Have you heard of any companies endorse it?
Today, more than TEN COMPANIES - Compaq, Dell, Micron, HP, IBM, NEC, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Sequent, Quantex, etc. announced products based on Intel's 550 MHz Pentium /// - so these folks certainly don't need any 550 MHz K7's.
That means AMD better yield 100% 600 MHz K7's - to edge out Intel's Coppermine by 3 months.
However, my sources indicate that Intel is CURRENTLY very close to sampling 600 MHz Coppermine CPUs.
High end customers will then have a choice to make - will they bet the farm that AMD can build volumes of 184 sq. mm. K7's (0.25 micron) or that Intel can build volumes of 109 sq. mm. Coppermines (0.18 micron) ?
Who has the best track record of manufacturing and DELIVERY?
Whose die is 68% SMALLER than the other's ?
Place your bets.
