I thought of a way of describing it that I have gleaned. Evangelicals are distinguished from Fundamentalists by being somewhat less intransigent and more open to the modern world, although the broad use of the category includes Fundamentalists and charismatics, and sometimes charismatic groups within mainline denominations are included. Perhaps you are right about its utility, but on the other hand, most self- identified Jews are not religious and many are, like me, of mixed ethnicity, so pollsters generally go by what people say about themselves....
