Sudan's Finance Minister on Monday said the fact that Sudan enter the domain of oil production would result in a revision of the whole performance and the structure of the national economy.

He said the Ministry is currently bent on studying the effects of petroleum production on the overall economic performance of the country, saying the outcome of these studies would be made public by the end of the fist half of the current fiscal year.

The minister said the average inflation rate has been put at 14.2 % in the first quarter of the fiscal year compared to 22.2% for the same period last year.

KHARTOUM, May 17 (AFP)--A senior officer in the pro-government
South Sudan Defence Force (SSDF) has defected to the rebel Sudan
People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in an oil-rich region, a member of
parliament said.

Tito Biel, a high-ranking SSDF commander last week led three
other officers and an unspecified number of soldiers to join the
SPLA at Yirol in the southern Al-Buhayrat (Lakes) State, the MP from
neighbouring Al-Wihda State, Tot Galwak, said, according to Khartoum
papers on Monday.

Galwak said Biel had previously led SSDF forces of Assistant
President Riek Machar in clashes against government troops and men
of Major General Paulino Mateb, an arch-rival of Machar, over the
responsibility of guarding oil fields in Al-Wihda state.

The oil fields lie about 800 kilometres (500 miles) south of Khartoum.

"If this report is true, a grave situation will crop up, posing
a threat to Al-Wihda state and to the oil fields in the state,"
Machar warned.
