Hilliard Lyons has its roots in antebellum Kentucky, but it is very much a modern, high-tech financial institution. Launched in Louisville in 1854 (as Quigley & Lyons), it took on its current name (formally, J.J.B. Hilliard, W.L. Lyons, Inc.) in 1972. The full-service investment banking and brokerage firm today has 1,300 employees spread across 85 offices in 12 states. Most clients are on the retail level and based east of the Mississippi River, but institutional clients are found across the country.
