Chuck, A correction for you. ATI's Rage accelerators also have trilinear texturing, though I am somewhat willing to let the Virge be considered "low end". ;<#)

Chuck, trilinear is nice, but it turns out that not many sw developers are using it at this stage. Bilinear does pretty well and doesn't take the performance hit trilinear gives. The SW guys go for:
1. Frame Rate (>30 frames per second is best, 20 is okay)
2. Image quality, a trade off between texturing method and screen resolution

Usually 1, precludes use of trilinear in 2.

Somewhere down the road, silicon will be so cheap that trilinear filtering will be done in a single pass, i.e. FAST, operation, but for now, trilinear isn't used too often.

Good luck.
