You and I are the small minority who can hit irons, especially long ones, better than woods. This is why you see many high handicappers and older golfers using 5, 7, and 9 woods. A one iron, if you can hit it straight, can be effective off of the tee box. I like hitting a 2 iron. I've never tried to hit a one iron, but Cleveland does make one for the irons I use. I carry a 8.5* driver and a 3 wood.

Regarding chipping, put the ball in the back of your stance if you are not already doing so. Too many people line up for a delicate chip line they are hitting their driver. Place the ball in the back of your stance and pick one club to consistently chip with. Using only one club will give you a better idea of how hard to strike the ball for loft and length of each shot after you have learned who the ball leaves the club face.
