Several reasons, I suggest. One, it's a fairly "safe" activity as far as US troops are concerned. With our ability to knock out air defense systems, and the sophistication of our air power, we really don't risk much. Of course we have "collateral damage," but after all one thousand dead foreigners is better than one dead American.
Second, it looks cleaner than ground war. Compare the high-tech photos of bombs homing in on and hitting targets with the photos of shot and wounded soldiers coming out of Vietnam. The public won't balk at what really looks no worse than most video games, but give them real blood and they freak.
Third, bombs and planes are modern and cool and sort of fun to order around if you're a draft dodger with aspirations of power. But it's much less fun to order people to go stand in places where real bullets are flying around. |
