I too brew and I can tell you it takes some experience to get up to the quality standards of the commercial brewers. Even then it is not the same. Home brews taste different than their filtered, lower gravity, commercial cousins. Some like it better, some don't. I wouldnt worry about homebrews cutting into the profits of commercial breweries unless there were some sort of serious beer tax in the US. From what I understand, taxes helped fuel the popularity of U-Brew shops and homebrewing in Canada. I think you are wrong about beer consumption in the US. Perhaps consumption of Budweiser and Pabst Blue Ribbon are down(I don't know). Certainly there are more people willing to pay for better quality beer. Unfortunately there is a lot of bad microbrew showing up out there. Small time breweries are able to win over bar and restaurant owners with low prices often without regard to quality. Over the long run quality will win out and SAM makes a very good brew without all the strange alcohols, phenols, aldehydes and other bad tasting contaminants that are standard components of some of their competitor's brews.
