Some people don't buy boot-legged movies. I can think of three reasons for that:

1.) Not the best quality,
2.) It feels like stealing and they don't want to do that, and
3.) It raises prices for everybody else.

Isn't it possible that there are a lot of people who don't even know that you can down load music to your PC?

Aren't there a lot of people who want the best possible sound quality?

Aren't there a lot of people who will not buy downloaded music from somebody who they know did not pay for it or is not an authorized dealer?

If the answer is yes to any of those questions then don't you think there is hope for formats other than unsecured/non-copyprotected MP3?
