[CAP Vs DMT / ATM Vs Gigabit Ethernet] Michael
Michael -
First you found my passion "Acura NSX" , thats because I can not afford a Porsche 959.
>> The market at this point seems to want DMT and CAP...I say give them what they want.<<
Seems to want DMT and CAP ?? The uninformed asking for it all... Kinda like the country re-electing Clinton, and then getting what they ask for.....
Another example: The Telegraph and the Telephone, they both run on Copper Wire, but one is obviously a better technology...
>> "In his estimation (Chambers, CEO Cisco Systems), it's this ability to scrap something and move on that separates companies like Cisco and Microsoft from the rest of the pack "The companies that get in trouble are those that fall in love with 'religious' technologies," he says. "The key to success is having a culture with the discipline to accept change and not fight the religious wars."<<
Now your talking Apples and Oranges.. Cisco is a diversified Network product company.
Amati is currently a DSL company and does not want to expanded into building ATM's Switches and Routers. But to make a point, CISCO has it's TAG Switching, I don't see them offering all the flavors of ATM switching the other vendors are using........
>> Another group of questions I have regards the telco/backbone issues with the projected ramp up of ADSL broadband implementations. From what I can gather ATM will be a core technology in supporting ATM in all of it's flavors.<<<
Confused reading that second sentence..
For one "they" say ATM is it! Yea Right! ATM to the desktop is to expensive to become a reality, unless they use ATM over (or riding on) ADSL. ATM to the desktop has a one year time frame to make inroads in the Market. At which point Gigabit Ethernet standard will be finalized (sometime in the Summer of 98).
Gigabit Ethernet is not only a vastly cheaper technology to deploy, but it is also backward compatible to every Corporate LAN, all the way down to the old 10Mbit LAN's.
Use OS/2 as an example of trying to make inroads into Windows OS. Was OS/2 backward compatible to all DOS and Windows programs? By being completely compatible (not only compatible, they speak the same language) to every Cooperate LAN down to every terminal, Gigabit Ethernet will win hands down because it is also cheaper, I have heard by as much as 10:1. ATM is expensive.
ATM will live on, of this there is no doubt, but in 10 years I feel Gigabit Ethernet will be similar to Windows, backward compatible and dominate in the market.
We all read and assimilate information differently.. The above is my take. Thank you for expressing yours.
It is only through healthily debate that all issues are brought to light. JW@KSC |
