Engineer's perspective ...

Engineer's decide to market a product when it's 'ready', marketing people decide to market a product when a customer is ready (sometimes thought of as a market opportunity). The problem that I see is that while Novell is taking the time to make the products 'right' MicroSoft will already have sold them something ... even if it takes two more releases to make it 'right' the customer that just bought a Server from MicroSoft is no longer in the market to buy a Server ... even if Novell's works and MicroSoft's 'will work someday soon'.

Judgement ... Engineer's judgement of products is much more severe than either customer's or sales ... frequently results in many more features, better RAS, more cost per unit ... than entry level customers are willing to pay for a 'first try' at a new way of using their computers ... cheaper, faster, sooner ... with limited function is usually more likely to sell than better, complete, later.

Hope this helps.

BTW I don't share your opinion that Joe M and Denise are too new in their jobs ... 2 months should be enough for them to make an impact on how things get done. I still think there is a a culture struggle going on in Novell ... and it will take strong leadership to push that struggle over to the side that is willing to take agressive marketing action. It seems to me that Joe M and Denise can't do it on their own.
