Everyone knows about switches - every room in your house has at least one.

Now consider a more intelligent one with say one wire in and 8 or 16 out (hey! lets hang computers or other switches off them).

This switch "reads" the input and decides which of the 8 or 16 wires to send the output to. It only sends to one.

Routers are like a series of ushers at a sporting event. The first one reads your ticket and says "second floor". The usher there again looks at your ticket and points you left or right. The next usher points you to the section, the next the row.

But all the other people in the row are aware of you coming because they have to get up. And you might "collide" with someone else trying to exit the row at the same time you are entering.

That switch would have been like a direct path to another switch which provides a direct path to just your seat without disturbing anyone else in the row and no possibility of collision.

It's more complicated than that of course, but that is the general concept.
