April Housing Starts & Building Permits

April Housing Starts = -10.1% to 1.57m

Privately owned housing starts in April were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,574,000, according to estimates reported today by the U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of the Census. This is 10 (+/-6) percent below the revised March rate of 1,751,000, but 2 (+/-7) percent above the April 1998 rate of 1,542,000.

The seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing units authorized by building permits in April was 1,569,000; this is 5 (+/-1) percent below the revised March rate of 1,654,000, but 3 (+/-1) percent above the revised April 1998 estimate of 1,529,000.
