Perhaps the most radical departure from the computing norm is the device's head-mounted display: a flexible headband with a rectangular display that sits an inch or two in front of the user's eye - somewhat similar to the way a mirror is mounted on a bicycle helmet. Innovative optical technology makes a 26-inch display appear to be about six feet away.

"The image appears to float in front of your face," Karidis explained, adding that the distance is adjustable.

Another device, but one early in development, is the cyberphone, IBM's answer to the latest rage in mobile devices. The cyberphone, designed by engineers in Yorktown Heights, looks much like an ordinary cellular phone, but a tiny high-resolution image of a Web page can be bounced off a mirror, found inside the phone's flip cover, to generate a virtual screen image in front of the user.
